Salad for Christmas

'Tis the season and every one is busy with Christmas preparations. The countdown is on. Like many of you, I am also planning the meal for the big event. This is the salad that I plan to serve on Christmas Day. Salad? Yikes! Where is the ham? Where are the pastelles, the cake and other edible indulgences of the season? Who cares about salad on Christmas Day?

Let me plead its case. Trust me, it too can be a star of a holiday menu. It's light, crisp and fresh. Oranges are in season now and citrus is perfect for awakening your palette. This salad is a perfect pairing for all the heavy, decadent, traditional goodness of the season.

Don't drown this salad in dressing. With all the rich main and side dishes to be served alongside, a sprinkle of salt and some cracked black pepper may be all you really need.

Do you have a favourite holiday salad? I'd love if you would share it with me.

  1. I love salads with fruit in it -it usually adds a new texture somewhere. Although, I confess that you lost me at no dressing. I cannot eat a salad without some dressing -usually a vinagrette.

    My special occasion salad is:
    Baby romaine
    Dates or Cranberries
    Goat cheese
Red Bell Pepper cut in short slivers
    Cherry Tomatoes quartered
    with this dressing

a Maple-Balsamic vinagrette recipie that I have from allrecipies.

  2. This would be a great salad alongside a festive holiday dinner. I don't have a particular recipe, but I like holiday salads with oranges, pomegranates, avocado, and some kind of nut to give a crunch. Maybe pecans?

  3. Fruit salads are refreshing- I do a similar one. It has orange juice in the light dressing. Gorgeous photos!

  4. I love adding citrus to salads! I often make an orange-pomegranate salad with a hazelnut dressing. Nom nom nom.

  5. Oh wow, this is just the exact salad that I want. yumm... I'm sure my kids would love it too.

  6. A salad on the table is a must in my house. I have a vegan in the family, she'll love this dish.

  7. GREAT!!! salad using oranges. I love friut in a salad it always adds a punch of color and sweetness.
